TEN SECRETS TO OVERCOMING STAGE FRIGHT BY JANICE DEAN

The title of Janice Dean’s engaging work, Ten Secrets to Overcoming Stage Fright, sounds more like a practical how-to book than a fictional narrative. In reality, this unique composition reads like a series of short parables, with the overall message remaining more nuanced and existentially meaningful than simply learning how to deliver a message to an expectant audience. Oh, the book does provide just such a manual of guidelines and behavioral tips designed to eliminate the natural fear of public performance – speaking or otherwise – and to insure a successful outcome. However, as the stories are told, one is aware they also create a powerful metaphor for living life meaningfully as well.

In her ostensible manual for effectively taking center stage, Ten Secrets to Overcoming Stage Fright, Janice Dean introduces us to a very central character, Albert Snow, who in turn occupies the bodies of various other characters central to each parable, or chapter, in which the ten secrets are revealed. Albert is an aspiring angel seeking to earn successively higher levels in heaven in order to achieve his ambitious afterlife goal. This requires that he occupy successive earthly bodies in order to inject his own hard-earned lessons into others. If he can achieve his mission, he can rise in heaven and accomplish his aforementioned goal. Personal challenges include one very stubby wing and a malleable transition between identities. From such a potentially convoluted plot, Ms. Dean provides a decidedly enjoyable romp while giving perfectly practical advice on how to overcome such universal angst.
