REVIEWING TODAY: DECLINE BY JARED KANE

decline

“I think that appreciation is a constant state of loss.”  Jared Kane

The best post-apocalyptic fiction, like Decline by Jared Kane, emanates a surreal vividness requiring for its success a master poet’s depth, a fearless explorer’s heart, not to mention – non-incidentally – a wordsmith’s ferocious writing skills. Mr. Kane exquisitely exhibits all three requirements in this poetic, heart-rending, impeccably crafted tale of the world in its aftermath. The author deftly paints a convincing and emotionally provocative image of the physical world left behind – survivors skittering through the afterward like maddened creatures on the prowl – but he brilliantly bases this mesmerizing story on the dangerous psychological depths of man, a darker place than any outside locale, visited and understood only by true poets, those with fearless hearts, and the ferocious writers of the world.

Leon and Percy meet years after the apocalyptic events inspiring the plot of Decline by Jared Kane, offering a moment to tell each other and the reader a bit about history’s final days. Kane lets his characters reveal this new world and its people, and one begins to shiver within the vivid reality that is exposed. The reader – a fly upon the wall, or a ghostly survivor unto himself – finds himself glancing out the window at a noise amidst the rain, then turning back to find his comfort in his new friends’ memories and presence. When the two new friends rescue Anna, the threesome begins conquering – or just exploring – their broken world. The ethereal beauty of Kane’s writing – both the transcendent and the abysmal, the hallucinatory and the dismal – makes his story a sensory experience so heady one finds himself trying to catch his breath, and then unsuccessfully attempting to reorient himself afterwards to the everyday world of the mundane, which brings its own disorienting decline. A truly masterful work. A truly gifted writer.
