JOEL R. DENNSTEDT REVIEW

ARTWORDS BY BEATRIZ M. ROBLES

Creative writing comes in several forms, three of which creatively mix two forms of communicative expression into a single piece meant to evoke emotional participation and meaningful understanding. In her originally creative work, Artwords, Beatriz M. Robles playfully explores these modern forms using calligrams, photographs with words, and redactive poetry. To be absolutely clear:

1.       Calligrams: Words become the images.

2.       Redactive Poetry: Selected words from a printed page make poetry.

3.       Photography with words: Literature and art combine, like words on a cup.

Of course, as with all hierarchies of art, there is more to creating effective (successful) final pieces than simply organizing, arranging, and constructing words according to a specific form. The final effort should produce a composite more meaningful, or emotional, or provocative than the individual units themselves. A symbiotic whole, if you will.

Beatriz M. Robles contributes an enjoyably participative experience in her own creative exploration, Artwords. Many (maybe most) of her pieces – especially her calligrams and photographic literature – are in-depth immersions in distractive manipulation using the classic double entendre as a clever linguistic device. One finds oneself helplessly drawn toward the sensuously seductive, only to feel slightly admonished and somewhat chagrined at having been so waywardly misdirected. It’s all in fun, of course, but it also provides a gentle prod to ‘wake up’ just a bit more. The redactive poetry is most intriguing, urging one to ‘try it out’. Like most poetry, understanding remains fixed within the beholder. All in all, Ms. Robles performs admirably and well.
