JOEL R. DENNSTEDT REVIEW

ON MEXICAN TIME BY TONY COHAN

“At what point do you stop doing the same thing over and over? Sooner or later, windows turn into walls.”

If you understand these words from Tony Cohan in his deeply evocative and warmly entrancing book, On Mexican Time, then perhaps you too were beguiled and seduced by our glorious southern neighbor and were fortunate enough to make your way home – a truer home. Or perhaps you remained looking out your sightless windows. In which case, I prescribe this book. You need it. For those of us blessed enough to have been spirited out of our hyperbolically-attenuated culture (read: shallow, or deadening) into the living, breathing, colorful (often, ironically, best depicted in black and white) sensuous and sensual organism that is Mexico, Mr. Cohan’s introspective, spot-on rendering of its endless facets brings tears of understanding and gratitude for our great good luck. Others have shared their experiences while living here. I’m not sure any have so exquisitely captured the essence and the meaning of such a remarkable journey south. Into life. Into living. Into being. But Tony Cohan is a writer. A skilled and accomplished writer. And he is meticulously observant. And blessed with enough ingrained humility to recognize self-lack when faced with an abundance of real humanity. And, finally, to admit when life is wrong and life is right and to stop doing that one same thing over and over and instead exit through an open window, head beyond those obstructive walls, and ultimately find yourself inside paradise, imperfect as it must by definition be.
