A VOICE FOR INDEPENDENT AUTHORS
WHERE DO ALL THE FLOWERS GO? BY LISA CRYSTAL
Where Do All the Flowers Go? is a children’s book written and illustrated by Lisa Crystal. The reason illustrated children’s books are deceptively difficult to create is because they must combine three disparate elements vital to every child: A compelling story told clearly and well; engaging illustrations that hold the child’s rapt attention, even while illuminating and deepening the story; and a vital message either clearly stated or unavoidably embedded. Add to this the need to target all three elements toward a rigorously narrow age range (especially when devoted to the youngest), and then to make all three elements work seamlessly and effortlessly together, and it becomes rather remarkable that anyone can produce such a truly lovely and highly engaging book as this one.
In her tender and moving children’s tale about dying and family grieving, Where Do All the Flowers Go? Lisa Crystal tells the touching story of an incredibly endearing mouse family, the Crumbs (get it!?) whose Grandma (Grandmouse) has just died. With illustrations instantly familiar to any child (similar to their own crayon sketches, but much more professional in their completion), and writing that clearly conveys with warmth and understanding the deepest concerns of any youngster, and a message vital to every living soul, this little book does everything necessary to earn it the rating of “Exceptional”. It definitely belongs on every family’s bookshelf, and it should definitely be read to any youngster currently facing the prospect of a dearly-loved one’s death. As for this old child, I still like the pictures!
