Gunne’s masterfully nuanced novel and ultimately whodunit mystery of the same name, is a vividly evoked personality inhabiting the body of a very young, very beautiful, very memorable girl who disappears quite suddenly from a marketplace in Brussels, apparently seized for just those qualities from under the very nose of her grandfather, Denny Barrett, an expat Irishman fresh from the violent clashes of “the troubles”. Denny Barrett is the central character of J.K. Gunne’s exquisitely complex tale, and he provides the easily engrossed reader with a highly intelligent, highly perceptive, highly concentrated perspective from which to wonder: Who took Sarah? Where is she now? Is she still alive?

Everything about J.K. Gunne’s mystery/thriller/ultimately psychological study, Sarah, is tantalizingly complex, and the complexity is rich, diverse, and intense – never distracting or obscure. Sarah, the girl, becomes the rope-as-snake metaphor expounded by eastern mystics (reality determined by perception) that ties every element together in this remarkable book. Sarah is the focal point from which every family member flies after her disappearance, forced outward and away from each other by the centrifugal force created by her absence and unknowable new life story. Gunne’s masterful writing and plotting is implacable when following their disparate trajectories, always coming back, however, to the central truth of Denny Barrett’s self-imposed guilt and unflagging efforts to locate, possibly to save, his adored but missing granddaughter. Without revealing the deeply intriguing, deeply unique, deeply satisfying climax to this deeply engaging book, I must add this: The finale is perfectly complex, too.
