The primary message contained in Your Precious Sight, Dr. Eichin Chang-Lim’s informative but accessible compilation of professional ophthalmic case studies, is self-evident in the title, and the doctor/author is repetitively cautionary, at one point summarizing her concern most concisely when she states: My personal motto and advice to my patients and loved ones – including you, my dear readers – is “when in doubt, check it out.” She is referring, of course, to any abnormalities one might experience regarding ongoing vision-related health, including less obvious but often significant indicative symptoms such as migraines, dizziness, and nausea. Obviously, Dr. Chang-Lim’s most forceful recommendation is that echoed by all medical professionals in every specialty: Do not neglect your routinely scheduled check-ups.
Dr. Eichin Chang-Lim is eager for you to keep Your Precious Sight. In creating her titled reminder of our most valued physical gift, Dr. Chang-Lim includes a wide array of personal anecdotes about her lifetime treating and consulting patients about their experiences – both positive and some less so – with augmented medical devices (contact lenses) and reactionary episodes due to disease or drugs or injury. There are many ways our vision can be affected by personal choices, by deliberate or thoughtless actions, as well as by routinely repetitious daily activities, and the rather short, typically jargon-free (medically speaking) stories told in this quickly-read book are – if not without some guilty gulping – readily recognizable in our own lives. The aim, however, is not to foster fear. Or self-diagnosis. The aim is to spread awareness and self-care. Even, you might say, to make the doctor’s job a little easier.
