REVIEWING TODAY: BEAU BEAR – THE FIBLE OF THE HIDDEN BLUE TREASURE BY M.R. EVERETTE
M.R. Everette writes what he terms fibles (pronounced fibbles) for children – stories that contain an untruth – and Beau Bear: The Fible of the Hidden Blue Treasure is the second in a series. The book is targeted to an age range of 4 – 6 years old, and this is appropriate. A four-year-old will appreciate the unique and colorful illustrations, which are composites of actual scenic photographs with cartoon characters overlaid. A six-year-old will be more appreciative of the storyline and plot development, which are a bit more complex than most young toddlers might find normal. Both, however, should find that the characters are fun to know and very cleverly named, such as Wheelburro, Beau Bear’s trusty donkey companion, and Crowbar the crow, the boat skipper’s devilish first mate, who hangs out in the ship’s Crow’s Nest acting as a lookout, and Squashy the Sasquatch – to name but an eccentric few.
In Beau Bear: The Fible of the Hidden Blue Treasure, M.R. Everette is sure to delight the alert child with frequent humorous asides and clever names for both characters and places. As the adventure on Blue Island progresses, the young reader should also be surprised and sometimes even astounded at some rather unique and curious happenings that occur, such as the antics of some rather deceptive ghostly pirates, the techniques of shadow walking, and the true mystery behind the hidden blue treasure of Blue Island. Overriding all, however, is the ultimate message of this original children’s book: the meaning of true friendships – both old and new.
