REVIEWING TODAY: BEFORE THE WORD BY BOB GLYNN
Before the Word is Book 2 in Bob Glynn’s The Time Company Series (including more beautiful illustrations) and continues where Book 1 left off, with one of Time’s creator/inventors taking off to stifle the consequences engendered by his two greedy and sociopathic brothers. In the allegorical context of the series: Hense (the Present) attempts to prevent the further grief initiated by Thence and Whence (the Past and Future). Ironically, Hense is dead. Or at least he is so presumed after leaping from a tower to a most certain fatal ending. The reason he survives, however, is integral to this ongoing tale.
Bob Glynn is no stranger to allegorical and philosophical thinking, although his understanding is more profound than either one of these. One vivid instance of his higher knowing is shared with the reader in a passage so short but lucid that one is left briefly but entirely thoughtless – in the infinite gap of now – which is his point concerning the true nature of existence in the moment. To miss that moment is to miss the message of this most beguiling book.
Told as one might hear a tale about the better period of the Middle Ages – with so-called common folk and pubs and grills and forest villages, thieves and spies and villains, not to mention the rulers of the castle – Before The Word has a wandering style that draws the reader in as would a fairy tale without the magic. Or is there? Like those two who cannot die? What might they fully represent? Perhaps the answer is to be found “henceforth” as it will be written in Book Number 3.
