From the Beginning by Bob Glynn is a beautifully written, gorgeously illustrated, allegorical tale about the origin of Time – though perhaps it is more accurate to say the invention of Time – by three brothers named Thence, Whence, and Hence, who form an original business called The Time Company. Due to their extensive and unique efforts to measure the unconscious intervals of life, corollary symbolic communication tools are developed too – like writing and arithmetic – not to mention the sudden need for money. The Time Company must get paid because it does not produce anything. And that is rather the concept behind this concisely-written, marvelous book, which is a delightful thought experiment as well as a most imaginative tale: What, precisely, is the material value of a measurable perspective?
From the Beginning is secretly a philosophical treatise in the guise of a wonderfully episodic story. Bob Glynn performs an elegant riff on a variety of concepts, including the capitalistic notion of surplus value, conspicuous consumption, propaganda and mind control, as well as all the biggies like happiness and experience, while not forgetting the biggest of them all: THE PRESENT MOMENT.
Lest one think this is a dry endeavor, a thoroughly pleasing storyline does develop around the brother in charge of the Present, one that is most reflective of a life lived in continuous awareness of the moment – where things both good and bad happen fortuitously; where people come and go as if beckoned by a beneficent but conscientious plan; where events arise and fade into a proper past, leaving only peacefulness and serenity with which to face the next event born from an unpredictable future. And if there is a moral to this most engaging tale, that part about how best to live your own story must be it.
