REVIEWING TODAY – MEXICO: SUNLIGHT & SHADOWS EDITED BY MIKEL MILLER WITH MICHAEL HOGAN AND LIN ROBINSON
As a member of the Mexico Writers group, I am familiar with many of the authors included in this thematic collection of short stories and essays, but until reading this book I had not read any of their individual works. That was a mistake. Most of these writers are true professionals, and the quality of their writing is unmistakably masterful. The stories included in the anthology are widely diverse and fulfill the promise of the title to show Mexico in both its light and in its darkness. One enters the book as one might enter Mexico herself: somewhat tentative, perhaps presumptuous, but certainly filled with hope – and maybe desperation – and the excitement of adventurous expectations, and just as the country itself exceeds those very expectations, so does this incomparable book. In every story one encounters the elusive mystery that is Mexico and its people, tastes the complex flavors of its culture and its food, bears witness to the unfamiliar generosity that seems to permeate this deeply religious society, but that celebrates everything with a fervency some do not quite recognize in the culture from which they came. Mexico surprises always, and mostly in a good way. So does this exquisite book that almost succeeds in telling all her secrets. But, a woman must retain her mystery if, like Mexico, she aims always to seduce.
