Decoding the Essence: Unlocking Your Creative Potential
One should approach a book review by considering the author’s intention first and foremost. Guy Kodikannath reveals his intent clearly in the title, Unlocking Your Creative Potential. His target audience is less clear but still implied: those wary and self-doubting regarding their creative skills, including those embarking on a creative exploration for the first time. These remarks are not meant to diminish or dismiss the author’s message. His writing is impeccable and precise. His observations are accurate and concise. His approach and format are highly accessible. Still, this book resonates with an attitudinal assumption familiar from another series, where this contribution would likely be titled Creativity For Dummies. In other words, it is best suited for those entirely unfamiliar with the creative process, totally intimidated by it, or thinking it’s a matter of innate skill, as suggested by one of its earliest admonitions:
“The truth is, creative thinking is often the result of consistent effort, research, and experimentation. It is a process that flourishes through routine practice and discipline.”
In the spirit of guiding a relative novice through the daunting complexities of accomplished creativity, this “smallish” book is surprisingly comprehensive and inclusive. Techniques are offered generously, while vital “how-tos” are not neglected. In turn, one would be wrong to think this book is only meant for “newbies.” True wisdom comes from knowing that one must re-visit the “basics” often. This truth applies to the most accomplished creatives, as well. In other words, a book as comprehensive, inclusive, and detailed as this makes for great reading, no matter the level one assumes.
