Contrary to popular belief, there are better ways to be comfortable public speaking than picturing an audience unclothed. Anne McKeown details those better ways in her highly informative and engaging book, Public Speaking: From Stage Fright to Spotlight. One might expect her narrative to leap right into psychological issues based on anxiety and fear. In a way, it does.

  • Remember that conquering fear is not a one-time event but a continuous practice. There will be moments of doubt and setbacks along the way, but these experiences are all part of the journey.
  • Authenticity has become a rare and valuable commodity in a world saturated with information and competing voices.
  • Your unique voice, perspective, and style become your competitive advantage, making you memorable and sought-after in your field.

However, this experienced speaker/presenter knows the first step in conquering one’s fears and anxiety is to be well-prepared. Thus, she spends a great deal of time in the beginning teaching how best to prepare a presentation. The information is invaluable and should be studied in detail before wondering what psychological tricks to play while facing an expectant audience.

Then, the author turns to relevant skills and their acquisition or development before implementation. Just know that these are not treated lightly or offhandedly. The information is detailed and deep, which is, again, highly beneficial to those who study it closely.

What about those psychological tips and tricks for dispelling anxious fear?  Let Ms. McKeown deliver those precious gems. Considering its comprehensiveness, depth, and detail, this book should be the “go-to Bible” for all aspiring public speakers.

Living a Fully Appreciative Life: A Review of The Half-Known Life
